AT&T has already replied by hustling a hastily-dressed Luke Wilson into directing a few resentful pins at Verizon’s effigy. However these new ads, while entirely in keeping with the iPhone tone and style, end with a line that expressly assaults the doings of Droid–or rather, its alleged non-doings.
Both ads focus on the iPhone’s ability to allow you to use voice and data capabilities simultaneously over the AT&T network. By asking gently at the end of each spot “Can your phone and your network do that?” Apple is bursting what it sees as the inflated stealth bombing that accompanied the launch of the Droid.
It seems that Apple doesn’t respect Verizon’s Droid phone quite as much as it does Microsoft’s PCs. But two new ad spots, launching Monday evening, come as close as Apple has done thus far to directly attack the allegedly do-it-all robotphone.
The Droid, you see, went after Apple in its teaser campaign with some telling remarks and the hearty claim that Droid does what the iPhone doesn’t. Then Verizon decided it would be fun to knock both the iPhone and AT&T’s spotty 3G coverage with its “Misfit Toys” concept.
The Droid has too many movable parts and Verizon’s mostly reliable network is SLOW. So, IMHO, it’s a stale mate. Also the Droids lack of good multi touch features (gestures, etc…) means that it doesn’t hold a candle to the iPhone in its current form.
These ads don’t mention the Droid or Verizon by name. But the fact that Apple has decided to address its rivals, however obliquely, suggests that one can look forward to more accusations, more bickering, and more attempted one-upmanship.

A sale of the high-profile Silicon Valley start-up that has raised $130 million in venture capital would add to a string of recent deals and growing consolidation in the solar-power industry.

Chinese solar-wafer manufacturer ReneSola plans to buy Dynamic Green Energy while silicon maker MEMC Electronic Materials plans to acquire privately held SunEdison, which installs, maintains, and finances commercial solar systems.

Privately held Ausra, which is based in Mountain View, Calif., launched as a solar-thermal developer in 2006, when solar power and other clean technology were luring venture capitalists.

LOS ANGELES–Kleiner Perkins and Khosla Ventures-backed solar-thermal start-up Ausra is in talks with three potential buyers to sell itself, two sources familiar with the company told Reuters on Friday.

The buyers could take a majority stake or snag the whole company and the discussions are at a “very aggressive level,” said one source familiar with the company, who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Both sources said the interested companies were global conglomerates in the power generation business but declined to name them. The companies already have various power products, such as steam and gas turbines, and are committed to renewable energy. One interested party has engaged with Ausra previously, one source said.

Two years ago the company landed a power purchasing agreement with California utility PG&E, a unit of PG&E Corp., for a 117-megawatt solar-thermal plant. Solar-thermal plants use the sun’s rays to heat liquid to create steam, which drives turbines and generates electricity.

Earlier this year, the company switched tracks, saying it would move away from developing projects and focus on supplying large-scale solar steam generators.

This month Ausra said that it canceled its agreement with PG&E and sold the project’s land to the largest U.S. solar-power company, First Solar, maker of thin-film solar cells.

With the release of Windows 7 has come a serious onslaught on new laptops. Great news for us, since we love choices — but we don’t really get a chance to take them all for a spin. ASUS’s UL80Vt caught our eye for a few reasons. The company’s increasingly attractive designs coupled with a really eye-catching price made it likely that this laptop (which is caught somewhere between a full-sizer and a netbook) could be on a lot of people’s radars this holiday season. The 14-inch, CULV laptop boasts an Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 CPU and, interestingly, switchable graphics. So, we decided to give this bad boy a try for ourselves — so read on for our full impressions.
We’re really fans of ASUS’s recent Seashell design, so when we opened the box, we were heartened to see that it is carrying some of the elements we love over to this model. ASUS’s dimpled trackpad and metal mousing button is all over its laptops these days, and it fits right in with the design of this laptop. Overall, the UL80Vt is an attractive package — super glossy and fingerprint prone, to be sure — but sleek and slim following the recent trend. It isn’t the most rugged build quality we’ve ever seen, to be sure — it’s thin, light, and also easy enough to bend or warp in your hands if you give it a try — but it also doesn’t have any hallmarks we’d designate as cheap feeling.
Performance-wise, we’re really very impressed with several tricks the UL80Vt has up its sleeve. This light laptop has switchable graphics (NVIDIA GeForce G210M and Intel GMA 4500MHD) allowing for toggling between discrete and power-saving integrated graphics, which automatically kicks in when the laptop isn’t attached to a power supply. The discrete graphics can also be manually turned on and off with the button on the upper half of the keyboard, directly opposite from the power button. The UL80Vt is also packing a 1.3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 CPU overclocked to 1.73GHz by default, another option which can be customized if you’re not into that sort of thing.
It also boasts 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 320GB hard drive. One thing which is nearly unmatched in our experience of similar laptops is battery performance — this one is quite simply amazing. The slight amount of extra weight that comes with the 8-cell lithium ion battery will not be grudged by anyone when they realize that ASUS’s 11.5-hour life estimate is seriously accurate — and also possibly the first time we’ve ever out paced a battery’s estimate when we got 12 hours, and 15 minutes out of this thing. In a world where most laptop battery life estimates are sheer jokery, this one, we were pleased to find one that was dead on.
Other than than that, it’s a pretty standard affair — we didn’t have any hiccups or major complaints, though the speakers aren’t the greatest we’ve ever heard. For a thin and light, the UL80 seems meaty enough to us — especially in this price range. Boot times are pretty quick, and we can’t really see taxing this machine with standard use. Obviously, portability and a long battery life are the real draws here. It’s got three USB ports and a multicard reader, plus VGA and HDMI outputs and an Ethernet port.

The OOMouse creators have contacted us to give their side of the story, claiming that they have emails granting permission to use OpenOffice.org’s logo. In their words, “Due to the massive confusion about OpenOffice.org producing the mouse and the numerous questions about the mouse working with programs other than OpenOffice.org, we have mutually agreed with Sun to change the name of the mouse and cease using the OpenOffice.org logo.”
Well, the OpenOfficeMouse rightly caused a bit of skepticism when it was officially announced earlier this week, and it turns out it is something non-involved after all — just not the way you might think. Yes, the multi-buttoned mouse is still all too real (in prototype form, at least), and supposedly set for a release… sometime, but it seems that mouse’s creator got a bit ahead of himself in slapping the OpenOffice name on it.
As it happens, the mouse was apparently officially presented at the recent OOoConference in Italy to judge the reaction from the OpenOffice community, but the relationship ended there, and the mouse’s creator was never given permission to market the mouse with the OpenOffice name (probably a wise move). Not one to be deterred, WarMouse now seems to simply be referring to the mouse as the OOMouse — don’t worry though, you can still call it “ugly.”

The new drives come equipped with a SATA interface and spin at 5400RPM. All three models also include a 16MB buffer. Combined with improvements to areal density, Toshiba claims you can expect data transfer rates to improve by 15 percent over previous drives.
The most capacious 1.8-inch hard drive on the planet now checks in at 320GB, says Toshiba, who just introduced a new line of tiny HDDs
Toshiba’s targeting thin and light mobile PCs and portable external HDD contraptions with its new storage series, which also includes two other models sized at 160GB and 250GB. All three drives sport a perpendicular magnetic recording head, efficient power consumption, a high level of durability, and quiet seek operation, Toshiba says.
Toshiba’s tiny drives will start mass production in December. No word yet on price.
Thanks to Toshiba, geeks will soon have reason to try and get on Santa’s ‘Good’ list this holiday shopping season. The company’s Storage Device Division (SDD) today announced what it claims is the world’s first dual-platter 240GB 1.8-inch hard drive for use in portable media players, camcorders, and other gadgets. Toshiba also introduced a single-platter 120GB model.
The two new PATA hard drives take areal density up to an impressive 344 gigabits-per-square-inch. Toshiba said the feat was made possible using its fourth-generation perpendicular magnetic recording technology, which bodes well for future devices utilizing the 1.8-inch form factor.

Lenovo let the word about this one out a little early, but it’s just now gotten fully official with its very first all-in-one ThinkCentre desktop, now formally known as the ThinkCentre A70z. Set to roll out by the end of November, this expectedly angular little number packs a 19-inch, 16:10 display up front.
Along with your choice of Celeron or Core 2 Duo processors, a max 500GB hard drive, a DVD burner, and a range of particularly business-minded features to keep things as stripped down as possible — even the built-in WiFi is optional. Head on past the break for a complete video overview courtesy of Lenovo itself, and look for this one to start at just $499 when it lands later this month.
I’ve been looking for some monitors or all-in-ones with decent looking backsides for putting on top of a desk that customers sit on the other side of. There are plenty of pretty devices, but the side that the customer sees is always butt ugly.
Lenovo isn’t offering any more than this picture of its new ThinkCentre all-in-one desktop just yet, but it’s already clear that it’s not messing around with this one. How can we be so sure? It has a map of the world on it, and maps mean business. It also doesn’t look like we have to wait too long to get the full story on it, as Lenovo is promising to make things official at the EDUCAUSE 09 conference early next month.

Apple and Palm have been playing this game since the Pre came out back in June. Palm knew from the start that Apple could continue issuing updates forever, but they hoped to get some support from the wider tech community. After having their complaint to the USB Implementers Forum thrown out, Palm was also told that their practice of faking Apple’s USB ID was unacceptable.
Apple is all about controlling their products and services. So it’s no surprise that they have locked the Palm Pre out of iTunes again in the new version of the software. The 88.5 MB update, v9.0.2, added support for the new version of the Apple TV software, but for those Pre owners that didn’t investigate fully, it also broke their syncing capability.
There are numerous ways to sync music with a Palm Pre, but Palm seems only to be interested in iTunes. There’s an argument to be made for Apple here: It’s their software, and they can do what they want. Would it be nice if they let the Pre sync? Sure, but it probably isn’t going to happen. In the meantime, Palm just isn’t providing their customers with a reasonable syncing experience. Should Palm just get over it? Should Apple take the high road and stop the patch battle? Let us know in the comments.
Apple software is the property of Apple. Many people create hacks to bypass the blocks and hurdles Apple puts into place to secure their bottom line. It’s a free capitolistic society which opens the door for anyone to jump on the band wagon and create their own, equally capable software store and sell their own apps. I have an Apple TV, an Apple Ipod, and frequently make purchases from the Apple store. I do not own an Apple computer. I just can’t see spending all that cash.

Acer has become a major player in the last few years. Their notebook shipments have more than doubled, mostly due to the success of netbooks marketed heavily to consumers.
They plan to continue on this path into next year.
PC vender Acer is on quite the roll as of late. They’ve finally become number two in worldwide notebook sales, beating out Dell. Now they expect to be able to ship 40 million notebooks in 2010, and take the number one spot from market leader HP.
Earlier this year Acer was predicting only 33 to 37 million units shipped, but better than expected performance in the second half of the year caused them to raise expectations. One of Acer’s major problems is the ongoing shortage of hardware, including optical drives, LCD panels, hard drives, and graphics chips. Acer Chairman, JT Wang, indicated that even with possible shortages the company would likely reach its goal.
Acer did, however, play it safe by pairing Android with Windows in a sort of dual-boot environment (Android has to be booted first and acts like a sort of instant-on SplashTop replacement), but that’s more than the other top tier OEMs have done. According to news and rumor site DigiTimes, that’s because other OEMs are taking a more conservative wait-and-see approach and will re-evaluate things once the final quarter of 2009 shakes out.
After seeing sequential growth to the of tune of 20 percent in the last two quarters, DigiTimes notes that netbook shipments from Taiwan notebook vendors is on target to backslide 8 percent in Q4. Part of the reason, analysts surmise, is waning demand as customers eagerly await the arrival of Windows 7, but vendors are also trying to keep inventory levels down on the verge of Intel’s upcoming Pine Trail platform, due to arrive in early 2010.

Can it be? Has the same company that dashed dreams by axing its USB 3.0-laden P6X58 motherboard back in July really just revived our hope in humanity? Out of nowhere, ASUS has just unveiled the first range of motherboards to support USB 3.0 and the newest SATA specifications, the latter of which brings along 6Gbps data throughput.
The one-two punch belongs to the Xtreme Design P7P55D-E series of mainboards, which support the latest Core i5 and Core i7 processors. Sadly, just two USB 3.0 ports are onboard, while a total of ten dedicated USB 2.0 sockets are scattered about. Feel free to pore over the detailed specs in the release past the break, and get ready to find the P7P55D-E Premium mobo ($299) and U3S6 expansion card ($29) at retailers next month.
Well, right now chipsets don’t do USB 3, so you’re left with dedicated USB 3 chips, which are bandwidth limited. I think it makes sense to do only one or two USB 3 ports because right now there aren’t a lot of devices that actually need the bandwidth. External hard drives are the only devices that really need the bandwidth right now (especially with SSDs, though they are pretty expensive). An enthusiast would probably only need 2 USB 3 ports until more devices came out.
Bluetooth dongles and printers are a PERFECT example of why it still makes sense to build a board with “legacy” 2.0 ports. The 3.0 chipsets are still relatively expensive and almost all devices you use with them (bluetooth, printers, most USB drives, phones cameras) either don’t need 3.0 speeds, or don’t yet support 3.0 speeds.

As one of the last two Vista holdouts on HP’s online laptop store (the other being HDX16), we were wondering what was going on with the Pavilion dv3. Well, it’s still not stateside, but Germany and the UK can apparently pick up the Windows 7-equipped touchscreen dv3-2200 now for £799.99 / €899 (somewhere between $1,305 and $1,350, respectively, in comparable US currency), with difference of pricing based on the separate listings.
Additionally, we spotted the 11.6-inch dm1-1000 — which was also leaked alongside the dv3 — with a 1.2GHz Celeron processor and that hot new OS from Redmond. We’re sure it’ll come to the US eventually, but for now we’re just gonna have to wait ever, ever so patiently.
Sometimes it can be for ergonomic reasons. Other times, the laptop will feature a keypad and, instead of centering the touchpad with the whole laptop, they choose to center it with the the standard keyboard area which pushes it a bit left. This is probably most likely so that your hands are closer to the area of the keyboard that gets used most.
