The new drives come equipped with a SATA interface and spin at 5400RPM. All three models also include a 16MB buffer. Combined with improvements to areal density, Toshiba claims you can expect data transfer rates to improve by 15 percent over previous drives.
The most capacious 1.8-inch hard drive on the planet now checks in at 320GB, says Toshiba, who just introduced a new line of tiny HDDs
Toshiba’s targeting thin and light mobile PCs and portable external HDD contraptions with its new storage series, which also includes two other models sized at 160GB and 250GB. All three drives sport a perpendicular magnetic recording head, efficient power consumption, a high level of durability, and quiet seek operation, Toshiba says.
Toshiba’s tiny drives will start mass production in December. No word yet on price.
Thanks to Toshiba, geeks will soon have reason to try and get on Santa’s ‘Good’ list this holiday shopping season. The company’s Storage Device Division (SDD) today announced what it claims is the world’s first dual-platter 240GB 1.8-inch hard drive for use in portable media players, camcorders, and other gadgets. Toshiba also introduced a single-platter 120GB model.
The two new PATA hard drives take areal density up to an impressive 344 gigabits-per-square-inch. Toshiba said the feat was made possible using its fourth-generation perpendicular magnetic recording technology, which bodes well for future devices utilizing the 1.8-inch form factor.

Lenovo let the word about this one out a little early, but it’s just now gotten fully official with its very first all-in-one ThinkCentre desktop, now formally known as the ThinkCentre A70z. Set to roll out by the end of November, this expectedly angular little number packs a 19-inch, 16:10 display up front.
Along with your choice of Celeron or Core 2 Duo processors, a max 500GB hard drive, a DVD burner, and a range of particularly business-minded features to keep things as stripped down as possible — even the built-in WiFi is optional. Head on past the break for a complete video overview courtesy of Lenovo itself, and look for this one to start at just $499 when it lands later this month.
I’ve been looking for some monitors or all-in-ones with decent looking backsides for putting on top of a desk that customers sit on the other side of. There are plenty of pretty devices, but the side that the customer sees is always butt ugly.
Lenovo isn’t offering any more than this picture of its new ThinkCentre all-in-one desktop just yet, but it’s already clear that it’s not messing around with this one. How can we be so sure? It has a map of the world on it, and maps mean business. It also doesn’t look like we have to wait too long to get the full story on it, as Lenovo is promising to make things official at the EDUCAUSE 09 conference early next month.

Apple and Palm have been playing this game since the Pre came out back in June. Palm knew from the start that Apple could continue issuing updates forever, but they hoped to get some support from the wider tech community. After having their complaint to the USB Implementers Forum thrown out, Palm was also told that their practice of faking Apple’s USB ID was unacceptable.
Apple is all about controlling their products and services. So it’s no surprise that they have locked the Palm Pre out of iTunes again in the new version of the software. The 88.5 MB update, v9.0.2, added support for the new version of the Apple TV software, but for those Pre owners that didn’t investigate fully, it also broke their syncing capability.
There are numerous ways to sync music with a Palm Pre, but Palm seems only to be interested in iTunes. There’s an argument to be made for Apple here: It’s their software, and they can do what they want. Would it be nice if they let the Pre sync? Sure, but it probably isn’t going to happen. In the meantime, Palm just isn’t providing their customers with a reasonable syncing experience. Should Palm just get over it? Should Apple take the high road and stop the patch battle? Let us know in the comments.
Apple software is the property of Apple. Many people create hacks to bypass the blocks and hurdles Apple puts into place to secure their bottom line. It’s a free capitolistic society which opens the door for anyone to jump on the band wagon and create their own, equally capable software store and sell their own apps. I have an Apple TV, an Apple Ipod, and frequently make purchases from the Apple store. I do not own an Apple computer. I just can’t see spending all that cash.

Acer has become a major player in the last few years. Their notebook shipments have more than doubled, mostly due to the success of netbooks marketed heavily to consumers.
They plan to continue on this path into next year.
PC vender Acer is on quite the roll as of late. They’ve finally become number two in worldwide notebook sales, beating out Dell. Now they expect to be able to ship 40 million notebooks in 2010, and take the number one spot from market leader HP.
Earlier this year Acer was predicting only 33 to 37 million units shipped, but better than expected performance in the second half of the year caused them to raise expectations. One of Acer’s major problems is the ongoing shortage of hardware, including optical drives, LCD panels, hard drives, and graphics chips. Acer Chairman, JT Wang, indicated that even with possible shortages the company would likely reach its goal.
Acer did, however, play it safe by pairing Android with Windows in a sort of dual-boot environment (Android has to be booted first and acts like a sort of instant-on SplashTop replacement), but that’s more than the other top tier OEMs have done. According to news and rumor site DigiTimes, that’s because other OEMs are taking a more conservative wait-and-see approach and will re-evaluate things once the final quarter of 2009 shakes out.
After seeing sequential growth to the of tune of 20 percent in the last two quarters, DigiTimes notes that netbook shipments from Taiwan notebook vendors is on target to backslide 8 percent in Q4. Part of the reason, analysts surmise, is waning demand as customers eagerly await the arrival of Windows 7, but vendors are also trying to keep inventory levels down on the verge of Intel’s upcoming Pine Trail platform, due to arrive in early 2010.

Can it be? Has the same company that dashed dreams by axing its USB 3.0-laden P6X58 motherboard back in July really just revived our hope in humanity? Out of nowhere, ASUS has just unveiled the first range of motherboards to support USB 3.0 and the newest SATA specifications, the latter of which brings along 6Gbps data throughput.
The one-two punch belongs to the Xtreme Design P7P55D-E series of mainboards, which support the latest Core i5 and Core i7 processors. Sadly, just two USB 3.0 ports are onboard, while a total of ten dedicated USB 2.0 sockets are scattered about. Feel free to pore over the detailed specs in the release past the break, and get ready to find the P7P55D-E Premium mobo ($299) and U3S6 expansion card ($29) at retailers next month.
Well, right now chipsets don’t do USB 3, so you’re left with dedicated USB 3 chips, which are bandwidth limited. I think it makes sense to do only one or two USB 3 ports because right now there aren’t a lot of devices that actually need the bandwidth. External hard drives are the only devices that really need the bandwidth right now (especially with SSDs, though they are pretty expensive). An enthusiast would probably only need 2 USB 3 ports until more devices came out.
Bluetooth dongles and printers are a PERFECT example of why it still makes sense to build a board with “legacy” 2.0 ports. The 3.0 chipsets are still relatively expensive and almost all devices you use with them (bluetooth, printers, most USB drives, phones cameras) either don’t need 3.0 speeds, or don’t yet support 3.0 speeds.

As one of the last two Vista holdouts on HP’s online laptop store (the other being HDX16), we were wondering what was going on with the Pavilion dv3. Well, it’s still not stateside, but Germany and the UK can apparently pick up the Windows 7-equipped touchscreen dv3-2200 now for £799.99 / €899 (somewhere between $1,305 and $1,350, respectively, in comparable US currency), with difference of pricing based on the separate listings.
Additionally, we spotted the 11.6-inch dm1-1000 — which was also leaked alongside the dv3 — with a 1.2GHz Celeron processor and that hot new OS from Redmond. We’re sure it’ll come to the US eventually, but for now we’re just gonna have to wait ever, ever so patiently.
Sometimes it can be for ergonomic reasons. Other times, the laptop will feature a keypad and, instead of centering the touchpad with the whole laptop, they choose to center it with the the standard keyboard area which pushes it a bit left. This is probably most likely so that your hands are closer to the area of the keyboard that gets used most.

The standard is based on input from the GSM Association, which expects the shift to eliminate 51,000 tons of redundant chargers, or 13.6 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
A standard for a universal phone charger was approved this week by the International Telecommunication Union, a branch of the United Nations. The Universal Charging Solution will enable the creation of one-size-fits-all chargers that can be used on any future phone, according to the ITU.
Universal chargers are a common-sense solution that I look forward to seeing in other areas,” Malcolm Johnson, director of ITU’s telecommunication standardization bureau, said in a statement. Manufacturers are not required to adopt the new chargers, but some have already signed up, such as Sony Ericsson,
They license the dock connector to anyone who wants to make an accessory. How is that elitist? The dock connector is far more than a simple USB plug, as it carries analog audio, digital audio and/or a video stream depending on which pins you access, in addition to power and USB data.
First of all, it’s about time. Nokia’s flimsy charging port system has betrayed me on more than one occasion, so mini-USB is definitely a step in the right direction. I remember when I had my BlackBerry that I could use the same cord to plug it into my PC that I used for my digital camera.
The UN is responsible for coordinating all things (well, many things) at an international level. It does so to foster cooperation and ensure no one government tries to improperly assert jurisdiction over other nations. UN also has groups devoted to disease control (WHO), famine eradication, child welfare (UNICEF), women’s rights, world heritage preservation (UNESCO), climate control, and so on. One of the missions of the UN is global evonomic development. ITU works to achieve that.

We’re still struggling to figure out why every PC maker in the universe has decided to debut at least one or two new Windows 7 machines today, but while we spin our wheels in frustration, we’ll point you in the direction of LG’s latest. The X-Note T380 is a 13.3-inch ultraportable powered by a Core 2 Duo SU3700 and featuring 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a GMA 4500MHD graphics set, 500GB of hard drive space, 802.11a/g/n WiFi and Win7 Home Premium.
In related news, the outfit also updated its X-Note P510 to include Microsoft’s newest, shiniest operating system, though otherwise it’s remaining exactly the same. Price and release for the little guy has yet to be determined, but judging by just how stoked that lady appears, we’d say it’ll be worth whatever LG decides to charge.
With a thickness of only 25mm and a total weight of 1.89kg, the X-Note T380 is the latest 13.3” with LED backlight ultra thin notebook from LG in Korea. The T380 is powered by a Core 2 Duo SU7300, has 4GB of DDR2 RAM, an Intel GMA 4500MHD graphic chipset, 500GB of HDD, Wifi AGN and sold with Windows 7 Home Premium…
A cellphone without an LCD isn’t much of a cellphone. Alright, yes, there are exceptions to the rule, but generally speaking, LCDs still rule the industry, which makes it a ripe target for nefarious price-fixing schemes to take root — something that LG and Sharp are well-acquainted with coming off a stinging half-billion dollar verdict last year.
All the talk of artificially inflated display pricing recently must’ve spooked AT&T, because they’ve gone ahead and filed a lawsuit in San Francisco today alleging that LG, Samsung, Chunghua, AU Optronics, and others all conspired to boost component prices during a period in which the carrier bought some 300 million handsets. That’s a boatload of phones — several times AT&T’s total subscriber base — and we’re guessing the result could be a significant cash outlay if they’re successful with the suit. Does this mean free Mythics for everyone?

You asked, questioned and implored — why, with all these underpowered touchscreen all-in-ones prowling our lands, can we not get a decent standalone touchscreen monitor? Well, somebody somewhere listened, and somebody else, presumably elsewhere, leaked. Presenting the entirely unofficial, but all the same real, Dell SX2210T: a 1920 x 1080 21.5-inch panel that has HDMI and DVI inputs alongside an integrated 2 megapixel webcam and microphone for your Skyping convenience.
If its 1,000:1 contrast ratio and 2ms grey-to-grey response time sound familiar, it’s because the non-touch sensitive SX2210 has been available for a while already. From the support documentation we’re looking at, you’ll need to hook up an extra USB connection for the touch interface, which doesnt appear to be multitouch, but we can always hope for a miraculous firmware update down the line, right?
The SX2210T flat panel display has an active matrix, thin-film transistor (TFT), liquid crystal display (LCD). The monitor features include:

■ 21.5 inches (546.8 mm) diagonal.

■ 1920 X 1080 resolution, plus full-screen support for lower resolutions.

■ Touch sensitive—detects your finger or any other pointing device close to the screen.

■ Tilt adjustment capability.

■ Plug and play capability if supported by your system.

■ On-Screen Display (OSD) adjustments for ease of set-up and screen optimization.

■ Software and documentation media which includes an information file (INF), Image Color Matching File (ICM), Touch Screen Tools software, Webcam Software, Facial Recognition Software, and product documentation.

■ Energy Saver feature for Energy Star compliance.

■ Security lock slot.

■ 2.0 Mega pixel internal webcam with integrated microphone.

Dell has been teasing its ultrathin Adamo XPS for weeks now, but all that goofing off will come to a solemn end next Thursday. On the same day that we sit down with Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer (and a little OS by the name of Windows 7 hits store shelves), Dell will also fully reveal the planet’s slimmest laptop. The 0.39-inch Adamo XPS will cost $2,000, and while the nitty-gritty details are still under wraps, a new Business Week article notes that it’ll boast a “heat-sensing strip on the lip that, when swiped with a finger, glows white and automatically opens the aluminum lid.”
The glamorous machine is part of a larger effort within the Round Rock powerhouse to revitalize itself and get people talking once again, and while this particular slab will obviously not be a high volume product, it could very well get a few more eyes pointed in its direction. Call us crazy, but we’re guessing next week is going to be a wee bit zany.
Garriques’ consumer group has been making some dramatic changes. In October, to coincide with the launch of Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system, Dell will begin selling the world’s thinnest notebook, at 0.39-inches thick. The Adamo XPS has a heat-sensing strip on the lip that, when swiped with a finger, glows white and automatically opens the aluminum lid. Garriques says the $2,000 computer will serve as a statement about Dell. “This isn’t going to be a high-volume product for us, but it’s going to be a product that says, ‘Wow! Dell did that. What else does Dell have?’ ” he says.
With Garriques and the other division heads taking more control over operations, Michael Dell has been freed up to explore new opportunities. Over the summer, he had dinner at the Four Seasons in Washington’s Georgetown neighborhood with James W. Breyer, a Dell board member and founding partner of the venture capital firm Accel Partners. Over steaks and red wine, Dell talked about prospects in mobile phones and other products. He then pulled out a half-dozen smartphone prototypes. “The way he laid it out, his thinking, led me to believe that in many ways the journey at Dell is just in the first or second inning,” Breyer says. The company is expected to introduce its first smartphones early next year.
